Delivery Drone Payload and Range: How to Compare Aircraft

Multirotor, fixed-wing and hybrid VTOL delivery aircraft compared, and why published specs are only a starting point.

Aircraft types

Multirotors are simple to operate and good for short hops and precise lowering, but range is limited. Fixed-wing aircraft fly further and faster but need launch and recovery systems. Hybrid VTOL designs take off vertically and cruise on wings, trading complexity for range.

Read specs carefully

Published payload and range are often maximums under ideal conditions. Real-world numbers drop with heat, altitude, wind, reserve-battery rules and the weight of packaging or a winch. Ask for the usable payload at your required range with reserves included.

Our filter bands

Listings are tagged by payload band (≤2 lb up to >55 lb) and range band (≤5 mi up to >50 mi) based on public information. "Range Not Stated" means we could not find a published figure.

Match the aircraft to the job

Lab samples and prescriptions are light but time-critical; groceries are bulky; spare parts for industrial sites may be heavy. Start from your typical package weight and distance, then shortlist aircraft that meet it with margin.
