Medical Drone Delivery: Chain-of-Custody Template

What a chain-of-custody record should capture when drones carry lab samples, prescriptions or blood products.

Why it matters

Specimens and medicines must be traceable from hand-off to receipt. A drone flight adds steps that your lab, pharmacy or quality team will want documented.

Record at each step

Package ID, contents category, sender and receiver, time of hand-off to the operator, aircraft ID, flight start and end times, temperature log (if required), seal or tamper-evidence check at receipt, and the name of the receiving person.

Packaging and temperature

Ask how packaging is validated for vibration, drop or winch lowering, and temperature. For blood products and some specimens, the receiving lab may require data-logger records with every delivery.

Exceptions

Define what happens if a flight aborts, a package is damaged or a seal is broken: who is notified, how the item is recovered, and how the incident is recorded and reviewed.
